Understanding the condition
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually because the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP) is too high for that individual eye. In some people, Glaucoma can occur even when eye pressure falls within the normal range.
Damage caused by Glaucoma cannot usually be reversed. The aim of treatment is therefore to reduce the risk of further optic nerve damage and preserve your vision throughout your lifetime.

FAQs
Can Glaucoma be cured?
No. Damage already caused by Glaucoma cannot usually be reversed. However, with early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and regular monitoring, further vision loss can often be slowed or prevented.
Will everyone need treatment?
No. Some patients with ocular hypertension or who are considered to be Glaucoma suspects may only require regular monitoring. Treatment recommendations depend on your diagnosis and individual risk of progression.
Can SLT replace eye drops?
For many suitable patients, SLT can delay the need for Glaucoma eye drops or reduce the amount of medication required. However, it is not a cure and some patients will continue to require medication or additional treatment over time.
How often will I need follow-up appointments?
